I am a big believer that pretend play should be a big part of a child’s early years. It not only gives them a chance to use their imagination but helps develop language skills, thinking skills and social and emotional skills. The great thing about pretend play is that it can happen in daycare, home, outside, car or just about anywhere. They often enjoy pretending they are at places they go to in everyday life like the grocery store, doctor, bank and other places you take them.
As my daughter is getting into pretend play, I started looking for things to do with her. Well the amount of websites, toys and ideas I found is overwhelming. So as I spent hours going through them, I created a list of my favorites.
All you really need is some costumes, props, books and whole lot of immagination.
Here is a list of pretend play from Auto shop to Zoo.
Blocks of all kinds: Wood, plastic, large, small
Boxes – cardboard boxes are the best, they can be turned into anything… tunnel, car, house, barn, treasure chest, rocket, castle and so much more
Dress up – create a collection of clothes for children to use for dress up – halloween costumes, old fancy dresses, crazy items from thrift stores or garage sales. Add shoes, purses, scarves and other accessories.
Jewlery – old costume jewlery, stuff from dollar store
Under a blanket – use an old blanket to make a fort
Wallet – let them use a wallet you no longer use, they can keep pretend money or birthday/tooth fairy money in it.
Yoga Studio – soft music, yoga mat and some kid friendly poses from Yoga Bug by Sarah Jane Hinder
